Special Effects Technician

A career that goes BOOM! Special effects technicians create different types of illusions for movies, television shows and theatre productions. You should thrive on showcasing your skills, hitting tight deadlines and finding creative solutions to problems.

Education Requirements:
A degree/diploma in the technical aspects of broadcasting, film production or theatre arts is recommended, though it is also useful to have training or experience related to computers, drawing, electronics or the mechanical or electrical trades. In addition, specific courses and qualifications are necessary for specialization, whether in pyrotechnics, makeup or robotics.

Job Prospects:
Since most production work is contracted out, you have to get to know people in the entertainment industry and build a reputation for quality work. You have to be able to sell your skills and creativity, meet tight deadlines and be willing to “pay your dues” by working your way up from entry-level positions such as staging assistant or props person.

Earning Power:
The average annual wage for a special effects technician in Canada is $40,000 but can rise to more than $60,000 with experience and specialization.
