Publicist

Publicists get press coverage for their clients. Outgoing, confident, enthusiastic and with an active social life, you help make people famous and project the public image they want. You may have a variety of clients, or specialize in working with people in fields such as professional sports, entertainment or politics. You must be able to meet deadlines, be creative, aggressive and organized. Excellent communication and negotiation skills are a must.

Education Requirements:
A college diploma or university undergraduate degree in Public Relations, Communications or Journalism is usually required. You may need an APR (Accredited in Public Relations) designation.

Job Prospects:
After graduating, you must "pay your dues" by starting in an entry-level position while developing a large network of contacts. You can begin making contacts while still in school through work experience opportunities or internships with public relations firms. Large firms may have formal training programs for new employees, but you still start out working under the direct supervision of more experienced publicists.

Earning Power:
Average annual wages for a publicist in Canada are $43,102 but can almost double depending on experience, clientele and reputation.
