Toy Designer

For the big kid at heart, a career as a toy designer may be for you. Toy designers are often industrial designers who specialize in toys or games. This is a very creative position that starts with an idea for a toy, game or children’s activity and ends with a working prototype of the toy. Computer skills, mechanical skills, creativity and originality and an ability to create safe, unique products are all important. Most toy designers have a background in graphic arts or design as well as a good working knowledge of computers.

Education Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture or Fine Arts is usually the minimum requirement for entry level positions. College coursework in liberal arts, child psychology, history of toys, art, anatomy and ergonomics, technical illustration, sketching, pattern making, packaging design and manufacturing all provide a good starting framework.

Job Prospects:
Average job growth for industrial designers is predicted through 2014.

Earning Power:
Average annual earnings for Canadian toy designers (industrial design) are $40,469.
