If you’ve got a car, allow yourself, say, $30 a month for gas. Find the gas station with the cheapest prices and buy gas only at that station. Use your car only for necessities: work that’s far away or groceries you can’t carry. If your gas is gone before the end of the month, walk, ride your bike, or take transit. A bus pass offers unlimited travel for a flat fee, but you are subject to the transit schedule. If you live on campus, using your bike is your best bet for convenience, and cost. Even off campus living in most university communities is conducive to bicycle transport. Of course, if you’re not too far from your destination, nothing’s more satisfying than lacing up those shoes and hoofing it!
