Make sure you apply early for your passport, and any visas, if necessary. If your current passport expires either before your departure or while you’re abroad, you can’t just snap your fingers and get a new passport. These things take time. And wouldn’t it be a major disappointment to get to the airport, bags packed, only to get rejected because you don’t have a valid passport or the required visa(s).
